Surya had technical ability but she didn't have the artistry and she needed a pro team to give her the polish needed to be world champion instead of her mother calling all the shots. She won the silver at the next worlds and accepted it with a big smile on her face. Figure skating has always had screwy judging systems especially in dance and it was part of the game.

I think her second place finish here and in '95 really pushed her to train hard so that by 1996 there was NO question she would win. She was such a complete skater here that if this program had been clean it would have been a closer race between her and Harding's LP scores.

I was in the room on this night and still feel so disappointed that Todd lost to Alexei. Yagudin was a powerful and talented skater, but he was sick and didn't pull his full weight that night. Had Todd fared better in the short he might have pulled this off.

Irina's free program was quite uninspiring compared to Sarah Hughes who deservedly won the Gold over Irina and Michelle's Free Program
